How to Get Lipstick Out of Clothes
Lipstick stains can be tricky to remove from clothing. But with the right techniques and products, you can often salvage your favorite top or dress. Here are our top tips for getting lipstick out of clothes.
Act Quickly
It's important to treat lipstick stains as soon as possible. The longer the stain sets, the harder it will be to remove. As soon as you notice lipstick on your clothing, start working on that stain.
Remove Excess Lipstick
Before washing the item, use a dull knife or spoon to gently scrape off any excess lipstick from the fabric. This will prevent the stain from spreading in the wash. Be very careful not to damage delicate fabrics.
Pre-Treat the Stain
Apply a small amount of stain remover or laundry pre-wash spray directly onto the lipstick stain. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to help break down the oils and pigments.
** Dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and hairspray also work well for pre-treating.
Wash with Cold Water
Always wash lipstick-stained items in cold water. Hot water can set oil-based stains like lipstick. Use an oxygen-based detergent rather than chlorine bleach.
** Wash delicates gently by hand or on a cold, gentle cycle in the washing machine.
Repeat as Needed
If the stain remains after washing, don't put the item in the dryer! Repeatedly pre-treat and wash the garment until the stain fades. Harsh dryer heat may set the stain permanently.
Try Other Removal Methods
For stubborn stains, try soaking the fabric in milk or rubbing alcohol before washing. You can also spot-treat with baking soda or lemon juice and place the garment in direct sunlight. The UV rays help break down staining compounds.
With some patience and elbow grease, you can outsmart those pesky lipstick stains. Just don't let them set or dry out, and you'll greatly increase your chances of success.
